From skepticism to strategy: L&D's role in building AI trust

The conversation around AI in Learning and Development (L&D) often starts with a single, essential question: "How ready are you to make use of AI in L&D?". For many organizations, the answer is "we're racing to get started," but this momentum requires a crucial reality check.

The numbers show significant movement towards AI adoption: 42% of large organizations have already deployed AI solutions, 26% of SMBs are already invested and 40% of enterprises planning to start soon. This rapid push for adoption, however, has a downside. Studies indicate that a large percentage of projects—between 60–80% of AI projects—fall flat without a sound strategy, governance, and the right skills in place. (Source: IBM, Forbes)

The top barriers that L&D professionals must address are:

  • Limited skill (33%): The single largest barrier, pointing to the urgent need for upskilling the workforce.
  • Ethical concerns (23%): Addressing bias, fairness, and transparency to build trust.
  • Integration/scale (22%): Ensuring AI tools can be implemented seamlessly into existing workflows and platforms.

The HR mandate for leading AI readiness

The responsibility for driving successful AI integration often falls to Human Resources, and by extension, L&D. 89% of CEOs say that HR must play a key role in AI readiness, uniting people and processes.

Despite this clear mandate, HR often faces significant challenges:

  • Internal preparedness: HR ranks 10th out of all business functions in preparedness to capitalize on AI.
  • Workforce skepticism: 54% of professional workers are wary of AI, posing a significant barrier to adoption and success.

L&D is uniquely positioned to address these challenges and can be at the center of the solution. The foundation for AI success is built on a three-part action plan:

  • Educate: Demystify AI among leadership and users with educational resources that add clarity and build trust.
  • Prepare: Assess use cases and risks to develop a strategic roadmap.
  • Demonstrate success: Be the face of AI success with tangible wins in L&D, then measure and promote that success.
